We arrived in Swakopmuck after many hot hours spent in the truck. Swakopmuck is a modern German town overlooking the sea. It has a major port within 50k of the town. Its main export  is uranium, being one of the biggest producers in the world.  This had been our first day off  from travelling for several  days and it was welcomed as we needed to do some laundry and a bit of R&R. There are many sand dunes in this area and Peter decided to rent a 4 wheeler to run around them. He and several of the other guys from the group had a great time running up and down the 50 m dunes.  After 2 nights of fresh seafood dinners, it was time to move on to the next 400 k trek into the heat of the desert.  After a good days drive we arrived at the desert camp Namib Desert Park in Sesriem. After a few pints to replenish our fluids it was off to the pool  to cool down. The next morning it was off for a 10 K hike through the desert and over sand dunes - some as high as 300 m. It was quite an effort in 42 degree heat.  Needless to say after that we were ready for a few more pints only after drinking a few litres of water along the way.

After a slow and easy lunch (they all work on African time -dead slow) we headed off to the Sesriem canyon. This was a canyon formed 1000’s of years ago and now has dried up. Approx. 100 ft. of rock that has been carved out of the desert land forms vast crevasses.  A wonder to see, although nothing like the Grand Canyon.

After another 600km trip we arrived at Fish River Canyon. Who would ever have thought there would be paradise in a canyon that’s 42 degrees and surrounded by nothing but rock and cliffs. The hotel and lodge is built around rock right inside the lodge. Totally amazing . The meals seem to be getting better as we head south. We have had Kudo, Zebra,Impala, Worthog,  Weildebest, and even Oryx. None of the meats tasted gamy. They were as for the most part delicious with totally different flavours.  What will tomorrow bring??? More pics I hope , as the internet  is very slow here.

  1. Hi there: really enjoying your amazing pictures and the stories that go with them....what an experience! At least you are staying warm ( or hot) It's cold here again and windy so the snow that we had on Friday the 14th just makes the banks getting higher and higher so the the snowplow just keeps on going around and around on each concession!
    Take Care....

  2. Hi guys, you haven't fallen off the edge of the earth have you? Guess you are out of range for the internet to work, or else you are still bouncing around on those bumpy roads. As Jean said, we have sooooooo much snow, banks are so high along some of the roads, Marlene you wouldn't be able to look over them!

    See you soon, The T's
